Is DNA methylation a good or bad thing?
-
I am kind of confused when it comes to the subject of DNA methylation and I don't know weather having increased DNA methylation is good or bad. One indicator of superior health and genetics is a higher birth weight.
This can be seen when cats that are placed on nourishing raw diets produce offspring with higher birth weights whereas cats that are placed on sub optimal cooked meat diets produce offspring that are much smaller and have lower birth weights. (View my 1st post for more info about this)
This relationships can also be seen in Guinea pigs and chickens were healthier organisms produce offspring with higher birth weights. The same happens in humans, where prenatal toxins such as alcohol lower birth weights and low birth weights in humans are associated with health issues.
However Ray Peat made some interesting quotes about DNA methylation: "Things that decrease mitochondrial energy production ... increase DNA methylation" (Source : Stem cells, cell culture, and culture: Issues in regeneration) . This is a bit confusing as some studies show that an increase in DNA methylation increases birth weights which is a sign of a healthy organism.
So is increasing DNA methylation good or bad?
