          I think the short answer is that it is caused by some metabolic dysfunction. Closely related to learned helplessness.

              @Ray-Van-Winkle I don't think that's necessarily true, older people have a higher risk of developing such disorders too (they're far from being npcs)

                  I had lifelong hypochondria, anxiety basically cured by fixing my gut. I can eat whatever I want now with no issues.

                  Also having something in your life to work for, since becoming a father I feel like my resilience has increased tremendously and I am in a far different headspace to what I was years ago.
