      continued from #1 https://cs3001.substack.com/p/a-bunch-of-quick-health-and-biology

      1. Surgery causes a big acute drop in pyruvate dehydrogenase activity through depleting thiamine (needed to use carbs fully, converting pyruvate from carbs to acetyl-coa & co2)
        https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4472607/

takeaway: need a thiamine boost after surgery

Measurements of PDH activity and quantity and thiamine were obtained prior to surgery, at the completion of surgery, and 6 hours post-surgery. Study subjects had a mean 41.7 % (SD: 27.7) reduction in PDH activity after surgery and a mean 32.0% (SD: 31.4) reduction 6 hours after surgery (p < 0.001). Eight patients were thiamine deficient (≤ 7 nmol/L) after surgery compared to none prior to surgery

      1. Monolaurin protects well against staph infection https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20021093/ http://visordocs.sic.gov.co/documentos/Docs019/docs20/2014/2014006996OF/2014006996OF0000000003.PDF?713
killed all 14 control mice within 1 week. 50% survived for 30 days when given monolaurin orally.
3.2mg monolaurin given to mice weighing 15 to 20g so 160g/kg = shown effective at 800mg-1g human dose. (higher dose might not be better).

Human milk contains monolaurin around 3 mg/mL. When the monolaurin is eliminated, the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity is low

, (also can clear some parasites responsible for stomach bugs,
BUT not suitable for long term use,
8 weeks of ~200mg caused metabolic dysfunction & inflammation in mice, because its only effective against gram positive bacteria which let gram negative bacteria grow too much)

      1. Constipation -
daily physical movement (walking) plays a big role in bowel movements. inactivity for 2 weeks = bowel movements went from average of 9.5 a week -> 4.5 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3748072/

Our results showed a new onset of functional constipation at the end of 35-days of bed rest in 60% of healthy volunteers as diagnosed by Rome III criteria
