DEVELOPMENT OR PROGRESSION OF AMDOther than the main modifiable risk factor of smoking, one area of great interest is the potential role that nutrition may play in preventing and/or delaying the progression of AMD; in particular, is
there any benefit in oral antioxidant and/or mineral supplementation? Antioxidants have been proposed to limit photoreceptor damage at the macula, by protecting against the cumulative effects of oxidative stress, a mechanism of cellular injury that is caused by reactive oxygen intermediates. The retina is regarded as susceptible to oxidative stress because of its high oxygen consumption, significant proportion of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (EFAs), and chronic natural exposure to high levels of cumulative irradiation. Animal studies demonstrate that exposure to ultraviolet light can lead to free radical formationn and lipid peroxidation of photoreceptor outer segments. Furthermore, studies have shown that this form of light-induced retinal damage, termed the blue-light hazard, is similar to the pattern of degenerative changes that are evident in human AMD.They go onto say increasing antioxidant capacity "been targeted as a potential avenue for preventing and/or delaying AMD progression. The purported role for antioxidants in attenuating human disease is not exclusive to the eye, with interest in the potential merit of such interventions for cancer and cardiovascular disease."
In other words, polyunsaturated fatty acids accumulate in the retina. Their solution is to use antioxidants, Vitamin E and other vitamins/mineral supplements to treat this.
To add insult to injury... the "essential fatty acids" which accumulate in the retina, and are worsening macular aging, are stimulated / exacerbated by blue light, which is increasingly prevalent.
Ambiguities continue:
Although the AREDS2 Study Group did report a dose-ranging study of lutein supplementation in persons aged 60 years or older22 and another examining the effect of oral supplementation of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids on changes in serum levels of lutein and zeaxanthin during supplementation in persons 60 years or older, the minimum therapeutically effective dose for the various components and combinations of components for the AREDS2 supplements remains unclear, and that limitation, unresolved.
Maybe more funding will solve the problem!

Similar pattern as this study "Impact of a high-fat diet on the fatty acid composition of the retina" defines "high fat diet" as basically >60% mufa/pufa.

Mice in the chow diet had 10% fat, of which 47% was pufa and 30% was mufa, so almost 80% unsaturated fat. Mice in the high fat diet had roughly 30% sfa, 30% mufa, 30% pufa, also a majority unsaturated fat.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the relative proportion of PUFAs, including essential fatty acids incorporated in the retina are modified by the consumption of a HFD, without impacting the amounts of the two major retinal LCPUFAs, AA and DHA. However, chronic exposure to a HFD led to several alterations among retinal SFAs, MUFAs and Pls, that could have deleterious consequences on retinal physiology.
So, once again, it seems that PUFA is the "good" fat, but "high fat diets" are bad.

MUFAs, and particularly palmitoleic acid (C16:1n-7), could also play a role in the protection of the retina from environmental stress (Gutierrez et al., 2016).I mean, how does something that makes up 42% of the fat content of the retina serve "no function" ?
I also wonder about the Ling cell membrane ideas. Saturated fat seems to be the nebulous "other" here. Is its role being deliberately lied about?
