The Middle Eastern countries basically blow this theory to smithereens. Qatar and the UAE are both ridiculously hot, and ridiculously wealthy.
The poorest countries are concentrated in Africa. No other populated continent comes close. Africa is far and away the biggest by landmass, but it also has the smallest coastline. Europe, at one third the size of Africa, has more than twice the coastline. This is due to things like bays, harbors, peninsulas, and such. All of these features are good for shipping, and Maritime Trade has been the dominating factor in commerce for the past 300 years. Africa doesn't have as many rivers either, and it's rivers aren't as conducive to shipping as those in North America or Europe.
Any factor that overall temperature plays is going to be much smaller than physically not being able to engage in commerce to the degree that other nations and continents are able to.
