what do you guys think? after the repeated exposure most of us have received as children, including massive exposure in the form of ct scans (at least I did) it seems better to lose a tooth to a cavity than lose your tongue to tongue cancer. even if I got a broken bone or something I would to have it set first without an x-ray.

@disfrutarlo I think you certainly want to minimize X Rays, even if you can't 100% avoid them. Since you brought up tongue cancer, I'll point out that the amount of radiation used to "treat" cancers is thousands of times greater than the amount contained in an X Ray. You probably wouldn't lose your tongue to "cancer" so much as "cancer treatments," if such a side effect actually did occur. An X Ray is somewhere between 0.01 to 0.7 mSv, and the whole body dose for radiation treatments for cancer is greater than 100 mSv, with the targeted area receiving up to 70,000 mSv.

Is it not possible to 100% avoid x-rays? People in the past certainly did. I made this thread mainly because I was curious to see how long it was people have gone since their last x-day. For me It’s probably been around 4 or 5 years. It seems like a lot of modern dangerous diagnostic tools like mammograms work psychologically as scare tactics, scaring people into submission. If you don’t get a yearly mammogram then YOU WILL die of breast cancer, YOU WILL lose your teeth. Though if we look at the health and skeletons of ancient people then we can see that can hardly be the case.

Chinese medicine specially talks about the power of fear regarding cancer, the more you fear it the more likely you are to get and the more quickly and powerfully it will advance. Thinking about it this way, that gives more credence to the traditional Japanese practice of doctors not telling their patients they have cancer. If you don’t know you have cancer than you can’t be afraid of it.

I mentioned tongue cancer because I know someone who’s undergoing chemotherapy for tongue cancer which they probably got from radiation exposure in the first place. They were the type to always get their regular dental x-rays and worked as a flight attendant on airplanes.

Of course it is. Simply don't go to a doctor, or decline the option even if you do decide to go. As long as you're an adult and maintain your rights/freedom, you have the ultimate authority over your body. They can't force you to consent, but most people do go along with whatever is suggested.

Well, maybe, but it's also just as possible that they didn't have "cancer," and yet it was diagnosed as such. There isn't full agreement on what is "cancer" and what is not. I've seen studies and other suggestions that there is only 70% agreement on cancer diagnoses, and that up to 30% of cancers are a misdiagnosis.

And even if the diagnosis was correct, I don't know if the standard "treatments" are in any way beneficial. In other words, they can't guarantee either a longer life and/or a better quality of life. I think it was Hardin Jones who suggested that opting for no treatment was the better option in all cases of cancer except those that were immediately life threatening. From what I've seen from people I know who accepted radiation and/or chemo, quality of life got worse, and often seemed to shorten life span.

Maybe it depends what it is for?
A CT scan is really terrible. It has a lot more radiation than an X ray.
I have an ascending aortic aneurysm. I get usually checked up with an echocardiogram. But a lot of people take yearly ct scans since it is more accurate in detecting growth.
My cardiologist suggested to do a ct scan next time to make sure there is no growth.
I don't really want to do it but then again an aortic aneurysm is a silent killer and I definitely want to stay alive for a bit more.
Just my thoughts. When it comes to regular X rays I usually just decline them. Also at the dentist which is sometimes hard. I had to change dentists because my previous one didn't want to have me as a patient if I declined X rays.
