@Amazoniac I assume you are what you eat does indeed make sense as long as there isn't an overgrowth. Throughout history I'd imagine when times are plentiful and fruits are easily obtained that the microbiome created from ingesting these foods would create a flora to push metabolism and neurotransmitters like dopamine to go explore and find more carbs and then in times of survival when more grains needed to be consumed that the microbiome would tend towards slowing down and making it through.
