This breathing exercise provides comfort in different circumstances, such as lack of regular meals, limited volume or caloric diet, and even during temporary complete absence of food in therapeutic fasting. It worked better than simple box breathing.

Here are the facts observed in this study:
    1.
The modified breathing exercise reliably eliminated the sense of hunger.
    2.
Gastric acidity decreased after performing the modified breathing exercise.
    3.
Pressure reduction in the colon was registered during the modified breathing exercise.
Reduced sense of hunger lasted from 1 to several hours after performing the breathing exercise.

So instead of changing the diet of obese people they should just do qigong.

I think guided, controlled breathing exercises have a lot to do with blood CO2

Tidal CO2 is the amount of CO2 exhaled in one breath. I'm guessing that if the amount of CO2 exhaled is less than it was before more CO2 must be absorbed.

But to be honest I have no clue. I've also heard that meditation is rather antimetabolic and so it'd make sense for it to calm a hungry person. Maybe its antimetabolic because it supresses hunger. Or Qi is antimetabolic.

The 2 are not mutually exclusive. People can do them both.

This study was not about meditation.

@DavidPS You're right in that they're not exclusive, I was just taking the piss (on brand).

I think any breathwork controlling (especially slowing) rate of breathing counts as meditation. This breathing exercise seems like a bit of postural control + breathing.
The action of focusing on a single thing is inherently meditative.

@PissBoy - Ok, I just have a different definition of what is mediation. I hope all is well with this.
