Maximizing Bowel Movements
"Have you tried the carrot salad?" is a common refrain in these cycles for all the good reasons, a good digestion is key, and frequent bowel movement seem to help with it a lot.
Share your stack for good bowel movements and things that have worked for you.
With the things mentioned bellow, I average 6 bowel movements a day. I really dislike the carrot salad so I mostly do mushrooms and ginger.
Insoluble fibers
Bamboo shoots
Ginger
Raw Carrots

@Skysnek The only thing that stimulates my bowel everytime is a cigarette

@Skysnek strong snus with a big cup of coffee does the job

I haven’t seen much talk about the overall quantity of carrot salad eaten. I’ve found much better results with a much larger quantity than I originally started with (1 medium carrot). I usually go for two or more now. Haven’t experimented with more than one salad per day. Generally when adding insoluble fiber to my diet is slows things down for a few days until my body adjusts. Haven’t found anything that works as a short term solution without also causing a fair amount of discomfort, even cascara. The biggest problem I am facing, and have been for years, is that my body works fine Monday - Friday, the. suddenly on the weekend my digestive system decides to stop working and I end up bloated by Sunday night. I deserve to be a neet.

I used Senna the other week and it was fabulous. Next times I used it, with week or so in between doses, I got less satisfactory results.
I find having instant coffee and going for a walk does the trick

@Charlie does it work fine during the weekdays because you're holding a job?
-
my bowel movements are always best when my Circadian Rhythm is on point
-
a liter of OJ and half a liter of kombucha a day and I poop 2-3 times a day no issue
-
@Skysnek Everyone that I know has tried it said they went to having at least one healthy bowel movement per day with cascara sagrada. The change usually occurs in just 1-3 days. I haven't "missed" my morning poop in two months since taking only about 300mg of cascara.

@Charlie you have ur own forum to post on

One thing to note is magnesium's laxative effect dramatically changes based on type and delivery method
1g elemental of mag glycinate pills? No laxative effect.
1g elemental mag chloride in water? Immediate magdump.

Did 2 carrots, 30g coconut oil and 500mg activated charcoal yesterday and had maybe 8-10 burning, watery and horrible bowel movements. Probably cleared most of the nasties out but would not recommend.

I have been tracking every sh*t I took in 2024 to attempt to quantify this.

first week: no peat
weeks 2 and three: carrot salad, cyrpo, huge aspirin doses, and a lot of niccotinebig change in frequency and quality, but also an increase in mucus/gas-induced mucus, which is concerning. overall, i think peaters are shitting too much, this can't be healthy

@pillsbury Incredible idea.
I think it would be better complimented with additional information on diet, quality of stool (on the Bristol chart) and perhaps level of physical activity. I was traveling in December and despite a suboptimal diet, I walked a lot and that kept my bowels working.

@Skysnek i eat takeout most meals but no seed oils, normally some high protein bowl with vegetables and some carbs. extremely high stress job, lift three times a week, 30mg niccotine per day. bristol 4 or 5

@Skysnek
Cigarettes, coffee avoiding grains and high dose magnesium does the job for me -
@Skysnek Magnesium (several forms), cascara, carrot salad, well cooked white button mushrooms, bamboo shoots, psyllium husk, carbonated water, aspirin, coffee, T3, sugar, B1, B3, potassium, vitamin C, vitamin K, pau d'arco, methylene blue, ginger, digestive bitters, rhubarb, senna, aloe vera, wheat bran is my general list of laxatives, along with an overall Peaty diet.
I also talked about improving digestion here:

I drink milk often in the morning and I notice it helps with ease of bowel movements. Other common things to improve bowels would be tea/soda/coffee (caffiene in general), orange-type fruit, saturated fat. The last item I note tends to solidify bowels into a more stable consistency.
