The probiotic fungus S. Boulardii reduces serotonin

To be precise they showed that it decreased salivary serotonin in humans when under stress.

That's remarkable since normally under stress serotonin starts and maintains the whole stress hormone cascade.
Which they showed in the control population: here serotonin went from 2.87 at rest, to 4.31 under stress.
In the S. boulardii group it went from 3.45 to 1.75 under stress. So the people taking S. boulardii actually became calmer when under stress.
So if you don't want to fold under pressure, take some S. Boulardii 😉

Not only that they also had lower levels of adrenaline when under stress. Which makes sense because serotonin promotes adrenalin.

"We found both discussed symapathoadrenal markers positively correlated with salivary 5-HT concentration. These findings are supported by literature data linking 5-HT with epinephrine. Rats presented a dose-dependent increase in plasma epinephrine levels in response to peripherally administered 5-HT (65)."

Here's another study in mice showing that S. Boulardii reduces serotonin. In this case by increasing its Transporter SERT.
The serotonin reduction is also the reason many people experience less BMs with it, since serotonin increases gut motility.

Here's another probiotic called B. Coagulans which lowers serotonin.
It does so by increasing other bacteria called F. Prausnitzii , which also increases SERT.

If you want to know more about B. Coagulans, I wrote quite extensively on it over here:

Interesting. Several years ago my gut was absolutely nuked by max dose clindamycin after a nasty infection that almost caused me to lose the use of an eye. The result was weeks of c difficile -like symptoms. The only thing that fixed it was boulardii.
