MRI scans of the CIRS patients' brains show that over 45% of them have areas of gliosis (scar tissue in the brain), compared to only 5% of healthy people.Additionally, MR spectroscopy, which looks at brain chemicals, shows abnormal levels of lactate (a sign of cell stress) and changes in glutamate and glutamine levels (related to brain function).
