Classic hiking foods like freeze dried meals are zogged to oblivion and pasta is full of gluten obv.

I base a couple of my meals around instant mashed potatoes and powdered milk is good to take (even though it’s difficult to find a brand that isn’t shit). I also bring a pot of honey and dates for breakfast and snacking, but I’m wondering what you guys bring with you. I need some more bioenergetic, relatively light-weight food ideas

@uh marshmallows would probably be easy to pack. 🙂

Lots of dried fruits for snacking for sure, there are some decent meat products jerky adjacent that are pretty clean, biltong being one. that's also more of a snack than a meal. Gelatin powder bloomed in water though not very yummy is very protein dense and is light weight. Could add in some honey or sugar though to make it a bit tastier.

May be worth getting your own freeze drier and making some dishes before hand to then freeze dry and take with you.

Not exactly a meal but honey can be useful to the active outdoors person for a few reasons:

Emergency calories, burns slower than sugar and has some nutritional content. Antibacterial, wound and burn dressing. Allergies, helps with sore throats. Trauma therapy, a spoonful for anyone who may have been badly wounded.

And since it is a natural preservative it remains edible for a long time. Good to have in your bug out bag for all of the reasons listed.

When I go wild camping I usually take powdered milk, dried fruit, dehydrated potato slices, oats, honey, instant coffee and salt.

A block of creamed coconut is also pretty good, very filling and satisfying to add to a cooked meal after a day hiking.
