I was a long distance runner for decades. I have avoided exhaustive cardio for about 12 years and I have purposely added muscular weight. I am still within the normal range.

I like the attached image in the study. It is not click bait. Rather, it is just a visual shortcut for those of you who do not have the time or desire to read the study in its entirety. From a longevity viewpoint, it best is best to be both insulin sensitive (IS) and , normal muscle mass (NM). For me, the only surprise is the magnitude of the impact.

@DavidPS I think a lot of this "muscle=longevity" stuff is an inverse correlation, "everything that kills you tends to shred muscle"-peat

@samson -Thanks for your thought. For me, maintaining muscle mass is more about anti-fragility and avoiding disability.

I have a 'smart scale' that I purchased at amazon and it allows me to monitor changes in my muscle mass, bone weight and other things. Here is the typical cartoon image showing how muscle is replaced by fat tissue as one ages if your not paying attention.
