      Has anyone taken pygeum? Does it actually improve prostate health or have side effects?

          @pondfountain - Pygeum is estrogenic.

          Peatbot.com: Improving prostate health can be approached through nutritional, hormonal, and lifestyle strategies. Here are some detailed recommendations based on the provided context:

          1. Hormonal Balance:
          • Thyroid Function: Ensure proper thyroid function, as a deficiency can lead to an imbalance where testosterone is converted into estrogen, which promotes prostate growth and inflammation.

          • Testosterone Levels: Maintaining high testosterone levels is protective against prostate issues. This can be supported by avoiding stress and ensuring good thyroid function.

          • Estrogen Reduction: Estrogen is a growth and carcinogenic factor in the prostate. Reducing estrogen levels can be beneficial. This can be achieved by maintaining a healthy weight, as excess fat can increase estrogen production.

          1. Nutritional Support:
          • Vitamin D: This is a major anti-inflammatory factor and is important for overall hormonal balance.

          • Calcium and Phosphate Balance: Ensure plenty of calcium relative to phosphate, supported by adequate vitamin D, to maintain energy systems and reduce inflammation.

          • Anti-inflammatory Foods: Foods like carrots and mushrooms can help balance reproductive hormones and reduce inflammation. Carrots, in particular, can lower estrogen levels and improve the estrogen to progesterone ratio.

          • Avoid Excess Iron: High iron levels can promote inflammation. Consuming coffee or tea with meals can help block iron absorption due to their polyphenol content.

          1. Lifestyle Adjustments:
          • Physical Activity: Regular exercise can help maintain testosterone levels and reduce estrogen.

          • Stress Management: Avoiding stress, especially at night, is crucial for maintaining hormonal balance and preventing inflammation.

          • Dietary Choices: Incorporate foods high in anti-inflammatory substances, such as orange juice, which contains bioflavonoids that reduce inflammation.

          1. Herbal and Supplementary Approaches:
          • Aromatase Inhibitors: Herbal remedies like nettle root and saw palmetto may act as aromatase inhibitors, reducing estrogen levels and potentially benefiting prostate health.

          • Progesterone and Pregnenolone: These hormones decline with age and can help reduce the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. Saw palmetto is noted for containing compounds similar to pregnenolone.

          1. Avoidance of Harmful Substances:
          • Unsaturated Fatty Acids: These can increase the availability and activity of estrogen in tissues, so it may be beneficial to limit their intake.

          By focusing on these areas, you can support prostate health and potentially reduce the risk of prostate enlargement and cancer.

            @DavidPS that's interesting, thanks.
            I noticed saw palmetto is included in in the list of things reducing estrogen. I noticed in a lot of pygeum supplements they included that. Since pygeum is estrogenic it it should be avoided but is the saw palmetto by itself safe?

              @pondfountain - Saw palmetto is complicated. There are mixed opinions about it being considered estrogenic; instead, its effects may be from blocking androgens.

              Here is a recent study comparing the combination of saw palmetto (Serenoa repens), lycopene, and selenium to dutasteride.
