It's that time of year again. Time to try making SolBan again.

I had previously used vodka in a topical and had horrible side effects from it. Making SolBan, I assumed that the vodka was a small enough amount that I could use it topically with no symptoms. NOT so.

Doing a bit of research I found that there are impurities in vodka. Ok, so I'll get the Lab Alley ethanol off Amazon--nope. Reviews indicate a high amount impurities such as ethyl acetate, and nasty symptoms from drinking (and yes, it's undenatured).

I have found some other potentially usable brands of ethanol.

But I'm also interested in the idea of an alternative solvent. AI is suggesting a mixture of propylene glycol, glycerine, and water. Interesting. I guess it would be more of a lotion, and I would have to figure out what concentrations of the active ingredients to use.

What are these side effects you speak of?

@Cicero ever since I cut out PUFA in Spring 2023, I haven't burned at all

Get 99% ethanol. Also someone mentioned magnetic stirrer, I will try that since the aspirin didnt disolve for me.

@jamezb46 I am low PUFA but I want the extra protection. Also, it just made my skin feel nice.

@heyman I tried both aniprin and salicylic acid powder. One of them dissolved for me--I believe it was the actual aspirin. Not sure what the difference would be, but it looks like it should convert to SA anyway.

Acetylsalicylic acid is non-stable in aqueous solutions and readily hydrolyzes to salicylic acid. The half-life of the hydrolysis of acetylsalicylic acid at 22.5°C in unbuffered water is 153.30 h (about 6.4 days).

@Cicero salicylic acid is also an ultra cheap commodity (you can get pounds for mere dollars from Bezos Mart) so good call there
