Aspirin causes intestinal damage?

Interesting study showing that short-term administration of aspirin causes intestinal damage through an alteration of bile acids and downregulation of the bile acid receptor FXR. Unfortunately, the effect doesn’t seem to dissipate over time like the stomach damage induced by aspirin; the intestinal damage was still present after 14 days of aspirin administration.
I’m not sure why that damage occurred, because it seems to have increased the more benign bile acids like TUDCA and downregulated the primary bile acids, as far as I can tell.
“In the aspirin-induced intestinal injury model, conjugated bile acids (T-β-MCA, TCA, TUDCA, TDCA, and TLCA) were significantly increased, while CA and CDCA were distinctly decreased.”

Now that I think about it, my cholestasis issues may have gotten worse around the time I started taking aspirin daily… weird.

Here’s another study: 80% of the people in the aspirin group had intestinal damage, while only 20% in the control group did.

@Mauritio You might wish to try mineral bound salicylates like Copper Salicylate, Schweitzer or Magnesium Salicylate (Doan's ) for less GI irritation.

is the aspirin enteric coded? Because that's what I think they used. I can't see the materials and methods. Enteric aspirin is nasty stuff because it's moving this acidic blob into the small intestine where it's going to injure the duodenum in the small intestine. I never recommend that type of aspirin. I only recommend the quick-dissolving aspirin. That's going to hurt your stomach a little, but that's the limit. And there's a lot of evidence that aspirin actually improves colon health and reduces the chances of colorectal cancer.

It depends why you take ASA. pro-metabolic action, against low grade inflammation? Mind platelet impact whatever the dose is. 10-12 days to get a usual amount.

@Ecstatic_Hamster i looked through both studies I posted and it seems like it's regular aspirin. Of it was enterically coded, I think would have mentioned it somewhere...
But aspirin lowers colon cancer risk by up to 60% so if the damage there were serious, it would sooner or later progress into cancer and we don't see that.
I was thinking about supplementing the bile acids they mentioned in the OP study but they're not available as a supplement and only a tiny percentage of ox bile...

@zorba990 wouldn't they just be metabolism into salicylic acid and the respective mineral in the stomach. So still salicylic acid in the intestines ?

@Mauritio re Mineral Salicylates, they get transported across as the mineral salicylate intact. They are disassembled by the liver. So there is no irritation from the salicylate part in this case since it is neutralized as a salt.

I guess the question is: would the salicylate-mineral bond be less damaging to the intestines (not the stomach) compared to salicylic acid?

The question is not to know if the salicin from WWW bark is aggressive for stomach mucin but how it is aggressive in the colon.

The Question is: How aggressive is salicylic alcohol for colon linen when the integrity is already weak, e.g. suffering from intestinal dysbiosis. Not yet from MICI.
I suppose we should first dampen excess sensibility from irritated bowels. With liquid extract from liquid plant extracts, like a combo with curcumin and melissa when there is anxiety. Other options / combos are possible.EPS extraits fluides de plante

Advice for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS):
You should work with both an anti-inflammatory for the intestinal walls and a calming agent for the nerve endings in the stomach. Try to choose the product that is as gentle as possible. Therefore, avoid powdered capsules or extracts containing alcohol. A glycerin solution, like the one from Pilège, is much less problematic.
