good thermometer product? why is there no go to thermometer to recommend?

thermometer recommendations are scattered all over the place, some people swearing by mercury devices, others saying infrared or digital etc...
what is the consensus on this issue? what is superior product? (give link)
i can say for myself that i was put off from measuring my temps at first because of the arguments over thermometer inaccuracies on RPF

@Chud I have used Geratherms for a couple of years and like them. They do take a few minutes to get an accurate reading but doesn't bother me in the morning. Only complaint is that I have broken 2 of them and they have doubled in price recently.
