Does anyone else get sleepy after drinking coffee? Specifically afternoon ones, I rarely get sleepy after morning coffee. Perhaps weak liver function?

      Sounds circadian.

You could try to salt or increase salt with your lunch and dinner. And consider adding a small pinch to afternoon/evening drinks or drinking less/proportionally to solids at those times.

For the why, look in to rhythms of renin, angiotensin, aldosterone and vasopressin. In animals that aren't distracted from instinct in the way "modern" life often demands us to be.

      Vasopressin here.

And it only gets more important with age.

Op it could be for a few reasons as @ThinPicking demonstrated.

As for myself it only happens if i have a cup within 30-40 minutes after a meal. If i wait 60-90 minutes afterward i'm fine. A pinch of baking soda inside makes it even better.

Coffee 20-30 minutes before a meal doesn't seem to affect me either btw.

@diomedes , I assume your morning coffee is before ~10am. This is the time until cortisol, the "waking hormone" is still high, so it may counteract the coffee "sleepiness" effect, which is possibly due to some theobromine in coffee.

There is much less theobromine in tea or mate. Try them if you'd like to stay awake in the afternoon 😉

That’s happened to me a few times.

I can get tired when I drink coffee at night. It probably has to do something with the reduction of stress hormones
