Homemade SolBan
-
Summer is upon us, and I'm going to try making my own SolBan for sun protection. Also because I loved the way it made my skin feel.
The ingredient list (per serving) that came with my bottle:
Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) - 40 mg
Caffeine - 10 mg
Aspirin (magnesium acetylsalicylate) - 10 mgThe current formulation doesn't say "magnesium acetylsalicylate". Not sure if that means he switched to regular aspirin or not. I know he also added succinic acid later on.
I'm planning on experimenting with the different components separately to see what I can learn about their effects.
Anyone else tried this, or want to try it?
The B3 should dissolve well, but I've never gotten aspirin to dissolve in water. It appears that magnesium acetylsalicylate isn't very water soluble either. And with a brief glance, I'm not finding magnesium acetylsalicylate for sale except from chemical vendors who probably won't sell to me.
OH, the bottle also says "The supplement is dissolved in a 20% ethanol solution." Per Cayman Chemical, the solubility of aspirin in ethanol is approximately 80 mg/ml. Cool.
I wonder what Peat would say about putting ethanol on the skin. I actually got really sick from using vodka in a topical that I made once, and I believe that was 50% alcohol.

@Cicero I thought he used salicylic acid not aspirin ?
-
@Cicero Excited to see how it goes, since SolBan is relatively expensive relative to the ingredients...
-
Give me the recipe and I'll try it.
-
@alfredoolivas I don't know, the current ingredient list just says "aspirin".
@revenant Going off the bottle...
niacinamide - 2.4 g
aspirin - 600 mg
caffeine - 600 mg
also succinic acid - 600 mg (if you're going for the current formulation)
... added to an 80/20 mix of water/ethanol to make "about 60" ml of solution. -
The formula on the IdeaLabs shop has salicylic acid inside instead of aspirin - 600mg per bottle, the same amounts. Maybe you can ask IdeaLabs support to clarify what is really inside that bottle. Salicylic acid power is much more soluble and really easy to source.

Would it work to just mix the caffeine, niacinamide, salicycacid and succinic acid with water or do I have to use ethanol/vodka?
-
I have tried this once, and in water the Salicylic acid will not dissolve. Once you use Ethanol it dissolves well.
In my test however, over night the Salicylic acid re crystallized. Maybe I did not use enough ethanol...I will try it again soon.

Shouldn't you add zinc oxide?
I'm about to try making my own sunscreen, and I've just ordered zinc oxide for it. My research has shown me that it acts as a physical protection against both UVA and UVB.

@AL Everything didn't disolve in vodka, I suspect it may be the salycicacid that didn't. Would it disolve better in ethanol perhaps?
The spray is refreshing though.
Where do you guys buy ethanol?
-
@heyman Normal first aid kit alcool
-
@heyman Is that undenatured?
-
@heyman Hum, i looked it up, and I think it likely is... maybe i should not use it for cosmetics. Did not know about this.
-
@AL I think I found something
I think it is undenatured ethanol. unvergaellt means undenatured according to google translate.
