How I Overcame Asthma
-
In this substack post "Wheeze No More" I discuss common contributors to asthma and what can be done about them.

@Sophocles
Thank you so much for this article, I read it a few weeks ago and it really helped as I didn't know why I was responding to mitolipin so well -
@Sophocles Really interesting article. Main actionable advice for asthmatics is to:
- Take a form of PC (and try to increase your consumption of phospholipids by consuming egg yolks and liver)
- Inhibit PLA2 with something like Gingko Biloba or Pycnogenol
- Inhibit the LOX enzyme with something like Boswellia Serrata or Clove.
Would be great if people who are asthmatics and interested in this reported on their results. How do you think about dosing and avoiding side effects / interactions?
-
Thank you!
Before I started PC no matter what I took I needed inhalers, but after taking anywhere between 2-3 capsules of PC (each 420mg of PC) I had no asthma symptoms - that very day.
After a while, I wanted to lower the PC dose, and I've been able to get it to only one capsule a day, but if I notice the breathing is deteriorating I will add in other anti-asthma approaches. Such as:
- I will try to make sure I do not have an excess of histamine, theanine, vitamin C or an antihistamine
- Block LOX with either Boswellia Serrata or Clove (+ vit E)
- Block PLA2 with either Gingko or Pycnogenol (+ vit E)
- Make sure I don't irritate my intestines or activate TLR4 - this is hard to do practically other than avoiding irritating things like talc you can also take TLR4-blocking things like glycine and progesterone
- Many other things also help with asthma, such as vitamin D and making sure you consume enough vitamin A etc.
In terms of preventing potential negatives of the PC, I do take vitamin E often, in the hope that it can mitigate possible issues. Also, vitamin E is a PLA2 and LOX inhibitor to an extent which helps. But having said that, even if there are some issues with the PC it's personally worth it for me because the asthma medications/inhalers are likely worse.
With this approach I'm asthma-free, however, I would like to check my blood eosinophil count and if high I would be concerned that there is some chronic infection going on perhaps parasitic.
Hope that helps! - also feel free to subscribe to the substack if you'd like, it's free to do so and I have posts on many "Maladies and Remedies". Thank you.

Hi Constantine, great article. Unfortunately very over my head/unfamiliar physiology, but it was interesting nonetheless.
I don't have asthma myself, but I lived with a friend of mine for a couple of years who had asthma. He would wake me up every morning when he got up for uni/work having a coughing fit, especially if drinking the night before (explains the hypoglycemic idea well). I am sure he has low vitamin D and also eats a pretty high phosphorus diet (lots of grains, meat, little dairy, no greens). Do you think the Ca:P ratio along with vitamin D would lessen the severity (as simple interventions)? Maybe I can convince him to get a Vit D test sometime soon. Really felt sorry for him whenever he would nearly suffocate having a shower without ventilation (from the steam). He also didn't eat a lot of sugar (plenty of starch though).

@djledda That's probably worth a try sure

@Sophocles oh I just love all of your articles! Thank you so very much for all your work ️

I am currently giving this a rigorous test right now. I've had asthma since my early childhood and have been on a steroid inhaler for a good number of years. (I got rid of my asthma one time before doing intermittent fasting and a strict keto diet. This unleashed it's own set of problems of which I am recovering from). I am taking PC and boswellic acid and I definitely noticed a different I am going on 4 days without my steroid use and I am quite stable. I will say this though I've also been eating some more inflammatory foods as these past 2 days and noticed an "asthmatic flare" but it was completely manageable and should I say very minimal, after a night's rest it was gone. For me 2,700 mcg of PC and 2,000 mcg of boswellia extract seems to be working wonders i am still having some slightly acute asthma but I suspect a bit more clean eating and perhaps supplementing a LOX inhibitor will help.
450 MCG of PC - what works for me right now is 3 pills in the morning and 3 at night
2000 MCG of Boswellia extract - I take one pill in the morning and night
I will post some more additions and changes if anyone would like more info.

@Lob also sorry for any grammar mistakes I am on my phone writing this during work.
-
@Lob good to hear! My go to herbs for PLA2 and LOX inhibitor are boswellia, Pycnogenol and Gingko biloba
-
@Sophocles I'll be giving all three of those together a try soon. I'll also post a two week update where I take everything you recommended so that I may be a good anecdotal case to other asthmatics.
-
@Lob thanks and good luck!
When allergy season starts in the spring the increase in histamine may lead to worsened breathing. So at that point some anti histamine approaches (like theanine) may be a useful addition.

@Lob it's been over two weeks now and this is what I've found works for me. In the morning I take 2000mg of boswella extract (this one is the main one that works for me), 125mg of ginko biloba extract, and 100mg of rench artine bark extract. I repeat this process in the evening after dinner and it seems to give me 24 hours coverage but that can vary a bit depending on what I eat. As for the Phophatidyl choline(PC) I've had to cut that out. I have a very low PUFA diet and have a constant PUFA intake was really messing me up and I think actually giving me asthmatic flares. I cannot get a good read in how much PC really helps me since finding a saturated fat version of PC is basically impossible, I may reincorporate it in the future but what I have right now works. What really really seems to be doing the heavy lifting for me is the LOX inhibitor Boswellia extract I may or may not incorporate another LOX inhibitor in the future. Also eating shit food I noticed fucked up me a little but taking just a little more Boswellia extract around when I had the food cancelled the asthmatic effects. All in all the wheezing is no more.

I confess I didn’t yet read the Substack. But I recovered from life threatening lifetime asthma through using Buteyko method. I became a coach and helped thousands of people over the years. It is quite easy really. But it does require a bit of work and I never found any solution in pills, or herbs, or food.

@Ecstatic_Hamster thanks for sharing! Personally, increasing the consumption of phosphatidylcholine was the thing that got rid of my asthma.
-
@Sophocles you are fortunate then!
