My Mom made it last weekend it was light and delicious. Pretty peaty I would say.
Brad made a tweet about peaty shepherds pie and it came to my mind.Moussaka (Greek Shepherds Pie)
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon Butter
1 cup Finely chopped onion
2 lb Lean ground beef or lamb
1 1/2 lb Tomatoes — peeled & sliced
1/4 cup Chopped parsley
6 oz Tomato paste
Salt & pepper to taste
Olive oil
Flour (for dusting) (Probably you could use milk powder @CO3 )
2 large Eggplants — peeled, sliced (saw this with zucchini as well)
2 Potatoes — peeled & sliced
1 cup Butter
1 cup Flour (Same here? @CO3 )
4 cups Milk — (hot)
2 Eggs — slightly beaten
1 cup Grated Mizithra or Parmesan cheese
1 dash Nutmeg
Salt & pepper to tasteInstructions:
Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet. Sauté onion until soft. Add beef half a pound at a time and cook in batches until brown. Add tomatoes, parsley, and tomato paste. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
Heat oil in a large frying pan. Lightly dust eggplant with flour. Sauté eggplant on both sides in hot oil until golden. Fry potatoes in the same skillet, using additional oil if necessary. Set aside.
Melt 1 cup butter in a medium saucepan. Add 1 cup flour slowly, stirring to form a smooth paste. Gradually add hot milk, stirring over low heat until thick and smooth. Mix in eggs and cheese; cook for 1 minute. Season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper to taste.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a 2-quart baking dish, arrange in alternating layers: potatoes, 1/2 of the meat sauce, eggplant, the remaining 1/2 of the meat sauce, and the remaining eggplant. Pour the cheese sauce over the top.
Bake until golden, about 50 to 60 minutes. Cut into squares and serve.
Didnt take a photo and my camera is shit anyway.
The top of it looked like the 3rd pic and bottom like the first.
