I’m gonna be poor college student, and I’m looking at ways to potentially save money. One method I’m considering is making my own butter and buttermilk. I’m curious as to what the benefits of Buttermilk are in comparison to milk(skim milk in this case), and would drinking buttermilk be a good supplement to reducing the amount of milk I would usually buy?

@WarmthofGod Is buttermilk a lot cheaper than milk where you live? Here in the UK buttermilk is seemingly more expensive.

I don't really think there would be any benefits to consuming buttermilk instead of regular milk. In fact, I have a feeling that buttermilk might contain more lactic acid than just regular milk from the fermentation process and as such would probably be worse for you.

(I just realised you're going to be making the buttermilk, surely this would be less convenient for you than just drinking milk? Do you have other reasoning for the buttermilk idea?)

You could make your own buttermilk by ordering a culture like Piima off the internet. Make sure to follow the initial activation instruction, but after that it basically takes zero effort, you just need a few glass jars.

People here will say that the increased lactic acid content is problematic. I slightly disagree, it could be problematic for some people. Eat/drink some. See how you feel. I have never noticed anything negative from it, but I also tolerate milk well and consume buttermilk with some carbs. Usually bread or rice, which might help the liver process lactic acid.

Making your own is far superior imo. Very tasty and very easy

You can make your own buttermilk very easily by just adding a tbsp. of vinegar to a cup of milk.

Then let it sit for 10 minutes or so. It should thicken up.

              Now you have buttermilk.
