Homemade SolBan
-
I have tried this once, and in water the Salicylic acid will not dissolve. Once you use Ethanol it dissolves well.
In my test however, over night the Salicylic acid re crystallized. Maybe I did not use enough ethanol...I will try it again soon.
-
Shouldn't you add zinc oxide?
I'm about to try making my own sunscreen, and I've just ordered zinc oxide for it. My research has shown me that it acts as a physical protection against both UVA and UVB.
-
@AL Everything didn't disolve in vodka, I suspect it may be the salycicacid that didn't. Would it disolve better in ethanol perhaps?
The spray is refreshing though.
Where do you guys buy ethanol?
-
@heyman Normal first aid kit alcool
-
@heyman Is that undenatured?
-
@heyman Hum, i looked it up, and I think it likely is... maybe i should not use it for cosmetics. Did not know about this.
-
@AL I think I found something
I think it is undenatured ethanol. unvergaellt means undenatured according to google translate.
-
-
So hard to disolve salycic acid, is it because I used vodka (too low %?) or why?
-
@heyman what concentration did you dissolve salicylic acid in vodka
-
@alfredoolivas 20cl vodka then added the powders then water
in a 100cl bottle
-
@heyman If you don’t know what concentration is, you are not going to have much luck creating your own solutions. How much salicylic acid powder did you add?
-
@alfredoolivas I copied the solban recipe
-
@heyman So you didn’t weigh out the salicylic acid powder?
How can you follow the solban recipe if you don’t know how much you are adding ?
-
@alfredoolivas Of course I measured everything duh
-
@heyman then why aren’t you answering my questions ? Ive asked you 3 questions and you’ve answered none of them.
There’s plenty of reasons why your salicylic acid isn’t dissolving, I’m trying to understand why.
-
@alfredoolivas 1g of salycicacid in 20cl of vodka and the rest water
(+ niacinamide 4g and 1g caffeine)
I got my 96% ethanol today so I will try that one tomorrow

@Cicero said in Homemade SolBan:
I wonder what Peat would say about putting ethanol on the skin. I actually got really sick from using vodka in a topical that I made once, and I believe that was 50% alcohol.
If it helps, I remember him saying somewhere that ethyl alcohol is ok but isopropyl is toxic. Strange that vodka topically would have that effect, because it’s supposedly meant for actual ingestion. Is it possible that it was another ingredient?
-
I tried making some once but did it in a hurry and cut too many corners. Some thing/s didn’t dissolve or didn’t dissolve completely.
It turned out gritty and I got jittery using it, so maybe I overdid the caffeine. -
@Cicero Ill just put bloo 1:1 with water in a spray bottle, much much cheaper than solban and i dont have to buy all the ingredients
-
@samson The thing is, I don't know if baking soda on the skin will be that good. The Salicylic acid only dissolves on the bloo mixture because of the baking soda.
