I think it may be possible to evolve into being highly intelligent by being competitive if the person has been wired to find solutions motivated by his fight of flight response
This kind of intelligence will make give you a substantial advantage to other peers but most of the time you will lack other qualities like social intelligence and novelty seeking motivation other than the drive for knowledge
Being a complete healthy free spirit and intelligent individual that follows any kind of novelty should be the target, and it is possible I believe only through cooperation between peers.
But I can't see it being cooperative as a form of competition, like you say. You try to find ways of helping others, but it is not related to how much others give help. Only maybe if you help your group of people in order to be better than the other group.
