I travel for work so I am relegated to eating canned fruits to meet most of my carbohydrate requirements. My recommendation for anyone who buys canned is to look for the dole brand with the ldpe plastic, the metal cans use a bpa liner. My favorites are either oranges or the tropical fruit mix which has papayas and pineapple.

@pswany Forget where I found this RP quote but he once had this to say about the safest fruits:

"Soursop (corossol), lychee, longan, guava, papaya, pawpaw, sapota, guanabana. Some frozen and canned fruits are good; applesauce, soursop, guanabana, longans, and lychees for example. "

Asian grocery stores have canned lychees and they are absolutely delicious. Protip if you go to a Hispanic grocery store, the frozen fruit section should have "Goya Fruta" frozen fruit pulp packs where you can find many of the above tropical fruits. Some of them have ascorbic acid or whatever though. Ive made guava Jello out of the Goya pulp and it slaps

@pswany I like canned pineapple too, eating it right now, but I believe Peat says it has too much fiber and serotonin. Anyone had a problem with this? I assume if you're healthy it really should not affect you at all.

@pswany Some of my favorites: rambutan, strawberry papaya (the small ones from Hawaii), atemoya, loquat juice (very much like OJ)

Rambutans are never good from the grocery store but if you can get them from a local market where they are grown they are excellent!

canned pineapple, mango, pears. applesauce. when you stop believing in plastics and chemicals they disappear.

can you not buy mandarin oranges or frozen fruit?

A lot of canned fruit has synthetic ascorbic acid added. At least here in Australia. It's made dirt cheap in China and gives me an allergic reaction and I've literally only found one local brand that doesn't add it. Sigh.

@jd_au the whole point of canned fruit is to get really ripe fruit preserved, since there is no timing constraint like on fresh fruit harvest and transport to market. yet, last time i bought canned mango it was un-ripe, and turned me off trying it again. it was some welfare program off-brand though, i think the Dole etc branded ones are better,

@sushi_is_cringe yeh I think quality varies markedly. I've found it's worth paying a few bucks extra for the top shelf stuff, it always tastes fresher and riper.

They sell the Goya Fruta at large chain supermarkets where I live. I’ve been getting them for close to 20 years—they have the best frozen graded coconut for making fresh coconut milk and cream—and just last month, I bought the guava and papaya and was bummed when I turned the packages around and saw that they now have preservatives. They used to be 100% fruit.

As per the thread title, my favorite tropical fruit is hands down coconut. My other favorites include:

                              • Banana, especially the mysore variety
                              • Cherimoya
                              • Jackfruit
                              • Lychee
                              • Mango, especially the ataulfo variety
                              • Mangosteen
                              • Passion fruit, especially the more floral, sweeter varieties
