Muscle repair requires muscle meat consumption?
-
I assume everyone here is familiar with the idea that many of the aminos in (muscle) meat can be pro-inflammatory. Also it is recommended to balance muscle meat with gelatin or to avoid muscle meats all together and keep protein intake moderate.
From my own personal experience as a 95-100kg fairly muscular male who lifts weights, muscle meat consumption is very beneficial for someone like me. Also keeping protein (of which a fair share comes from muscle meats) intake pretty high gives me way more enegy, better sleep, better recovery and more mental clarity. The majority of my protein still comes from dairy.
The mental clarity part surprised me especially, because i expected to have less mental clarity due to increased serotonin from the tryptophan but the opposite happened.
Lastly, consuming gelatin or collagen with my muscle meats lowers blood sugar a lot for me and I feel better without consuming it.
Anybody here have similar experiences?
-
@henkboogaart014 No similar experiences here! The drop in blood sugar I get is universal with protein, just means more easily digestible carbs are needed along with it. Having my low-histamine broth as a main source of protein works very well for me. Muscle meat simply doesn't digest very well.
Of course this is borne out by many studies, and Peat's insights regarding tryptophan and methionine. Of course if you're not having foods high in zinc and other nutrients present in muscle meat, then that might explain it rather than its tenuous superiority over gelatin
-
@CO3 I could definitely see it being related to higher nutrient intake since gelatin powder has virtually no nutrients and does require increased carb intake, possibly leading to imbalances.
I was just wondering if for muscle recovery muscle meats could be good to include. The logic being that the amino acids required for muscle protein synthesis are not present in gelatin. I personally crave high protein foods a lot, especially after working out legs I need a least 200 grams to not be hungry at night.

Collagen doesn't contribute to the muscle in the same way as other amino acids, the "essential amino acids" generate greater muscle protein synthesis.
I believe that ingesting more of these amino acids can compensate for a state of greater catabolism, but the tendency as you solve energy problems is that you don't need as much of these amino acids since at rest the muscle focuses on "burning fat". I don't remember very well, but I think it was Haidut who said that the greatest benefit of anabolic steroids was not the increase in muscle protein synthesis, but the anti-catabolic effect.
The time I ingest the most of these "essential amino acids" is after training, at other times I don't miss them so much and I'm also around 95~100kg. I haven't noticed any drop in performance by reducing my meat consumption, even though I eat/drink a lot of dairy products.

@henkboogaart014 idk. working out is very silly stuff. my broth is extremely rich in nutrients and like i said the drop in blood sugar is universal across protein. i eat meat once a week as liver-lamb borgar

@CO3 looks like Im guilty of being silly

are you doing any sports currently CO3?
I feel silly when I exercise but I also think I need more muscle mass in my upper body. I play tennis but my chest and arms seem very skinny! -
@peatuguese I go climbing in an indoor gym sometimes! But for four years no exercise apart from standing 40h a week at work. It's case-sensitive, but most exercise is very silly. Team sports like tennis have elements of genuine play that can be very good, and if I am correct the movements are mostly concentric rather than eccentric, like climbing or swimming.
Trying to build some muscle mass in your upper body isn't crazy, but I would suggest doing it with activities that are fun and interesting in their own right. Climbing might be perfect for you

@CO3 Thanks for the advice, I think I will try climbing! there's an indoor one close to me.
Yeah I agree even soccer I like playing (lately trying to not do it breathlessly) just because of the social and game aspects, some moments are truly epic. Padel tennis is also really popular here now and always keeps at least 4 friends in touch with each other
