Phytol – Forgotten Peaty Wonder Substance?
-
A couple of years ago, Phytol was known and appreciated among the peat community. That was almost exclusively because it was part of the 2nd (and 1st?) generation Gonadin Idealabs product.
I don’t know why it was removed, and I also don’t see a good reason for it.I’ve been researching Phytol and Diosgenin for a while.
I will make a thread about Diosgenin when the time is right, but for today, I’ll focus on Phytol.Phytol is part of chlorophyll and thus one of the most “natural” molecules.
It is structurally similar to vitamin E and K (and also to CoQ10).
On the Internet, it’s never really talked about as a supplement.
It’s used in some perfumes (it has a nice earthy, herb-like smell), and it’s sold in some terpene or cannabis shops.
Here are some interesting studies on Phytol:
Haidut previously posted studies on Phytol increasing testosterone and progesterone while lowering estrogen—a rare combination [1].
Haidut also posted a study showing that Phytol inhibits an enzyme that leads to lower NAD levels. Giving mice Phytol increased blood NAD levels [2].
It’s a completely different pathway compared to what is usually used to manipulate NAD levels.
This enzyme is mostly expressed in the liver and kidneys.
In studies, inhibiting this enzyme reversed NAFLD and acute kidney injury [3].
Phytol lowers weight gain on a high-fat diet. It drastically increases UCP1 (by 10× in white adipose tissue!), PGC1α, AMPK, and cytochrome C.
It also strongly increases the most important enzyme for glucose oxidation, pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) [4].

Phytol lowers inflammation (paw edema) induced by serotonin or histamine.
It also lowers inflammatory cytokines and MDA while increasing glutathione. The effect is dose-dependent [5].

Phytol drastically inhibits gastric ulcers induced by NSAIDs and other compounds [6].
Phytol seems to be a GABA-A receptor agonist, lengthening sleep time [7].
It also binds to 5-HT1A receptors, though it’s unclear whether it agonizes or antagonizes them [8].
“PHY efficiently interacts with COX-1 and 2, NF-κB, and IL-1β. In conclusion, PHY exhibits anti-inflammatory activity, possibly via COX-1 and 2, NF-κB, and IL-1β dependent pathways” [9].
Phytol produces antihyperalgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antiarthritic effects [10].
It could be a dopamine D2 antagonist based on its antiemetic properties, but this could also be due to possible 5-HT3 antagonism (similar to ondansetron) [11].
Anti-bacterial / anti-biofilm activity [12][13].
In vitro anticancer activity of Phytol on human non-small cell lung cancer A549 cells [14].
Thanks for reading.

Very cool! I’m sure you will keep us posted on how you use this product and the effects! Ethanol? Oil?
I’m going to keep looking into phytol in green tea/matcha etc.

@dapose sure ,it's pure phytol, food grade.
It's feels very calming, androgenic and skin and hair look better. Also feel physically more robust and endurant. Muscles look fuller.
After 3 days it started feeling a bit sedative, might combine it with coffee / sth. dopaminergic.
Over all I really like it.
Ill Go onvacation soon , so not sure how much I'll be able to experiment but will do so in the future. -
@Mauritio I can't find it on Amazon. Can you provide a direct link?
