@Ivy I think one important aspect is that it portrays something of moral value. It might be sad/gloomy/horrific, but if the struggle is towards something of greater moral value, it can still be a "uplifting" movie, even if it ends in catastrophe. The opposite is also true, a movie can be superficially "dopaminergic" or whatever but pushing moral degeneracy.

Most recent thing I watched was the first season of The Terror which was pretty good. Kind of slow in the beginning but good character development. Started watching season 2 (stand-alone) but was very disappointed.

@Jonk Thanks for adding to the discussion. I'm not sure I can fully agree with your argument, you know? I want to, but I can complicate things with a movie such as The Fountainhed, by King Vidor. For many people, the underlying "philosophy" is repulsive. But Gary Cooper is a powerhouse, which somehow electrifies and absolves his character. I love this movie, no matter who wrote it.

@Ivy Haven't watched it, but just from the synopsis it sounds like it conforms to my thesis. "An uncompromising, visionary architect struggles to maintain his integrity and individualism despite personal, professional and economic pressures to conform to popular standards." The character doesn't need to be of moral upstanding but the struggle needs to be towards something good, true or beautiful. So maybe moral value is too limited, but it cant anyway just be the pursuit of money, power, status or whatever, even if that's a part of the storyline. Maybe I shouldn't comment on it since I haven't seen it but oh well

@reformedski Thanks for the tip. I do not own a TV, so I am not really watching films at the moment. I will keep the film in mind. Is Zimna wojna worth watching? I was planning to see it at the Cinema when it came out, but nothing came of it.

Moreover, are there any Polish books worth reading?

@Norwegian-Mugabe I have not seen Zimna wojna. My dad was born and raised in Poland and my mom born and raised in Colombia, so sadly I am not as "Polish" or "Colombian" as I would want to be when it comes to discussions about this. I can ask my dad if there are more good movies or books. Potop is originally a historical novel that was required reading for my dad when he grew up in Poland. Not sure if it still is but he thought it was great

@reformedski Sorry about your Identity theft. It would be great to get some reccomendations. There are over 100 000 poles in Norway, but I do not understand them. It could help to read some Polish books. I like Chopin.
