Vitamin K2 reverses fatty liver disease

Very interesting study in animals on vitamin K2 and fatty liver.
They induced a fatty liver in mice via a high fat diet and then added 0.6/1.2/1.8 mg (HED)of Vitamin K2 to the diet.
You can see that the vitamin K2 drastically reduced body fat gain. The most effective dose, was the medium dose (M) 1.2mg, which almost restored the body fat levels to that of the control animals.

Vitamin K2 also reversed the liver weight and the NAFLD score back to normal, indicating reversal of the pathology.


This is corroborated by the epididymal fat weight of the mice, which reflects visceral fat content, which was also strongly reduced by vitamin K2.
It is often said how visceral fat corresponds to liver fat, so this would as well hint at a decrease in liver fat to almost normal levels.

The researchers also showed that an enzyme called alanine dehydrogenase was increased by vitamin K2. They claim it's not statistically significant, but from the image it looks like an increase of about 30-40%.
This enzyme converts alanine to pyruvate and thus could help the ETC/ TCA cycle. It also seems to be able to synthesize glycine, which is very liver protective as well.

A few comments:
1.Usually the liver enzymes are elevated from a high fat diet. For some reason this was not the case, and so vitamin K did not lower them as well.2.I don't know which type of votamin K2 this was: MK7 or MK4. If it was MK7 it's quite a high dose, but for MK4 it's a low dose. I suspect it was MK7 but not sure.
3.The most effective dose was consistently the medium dose.

It was most certainly Mk-7. The authors exclusively refer to it several times.
Also they company from where they had sourced their K2 is all about Mk-7 (Sungen Bioscience Co., Ltd). -
@CrumblingCookie ok thanks. I was hoping it was mk4 because that's what I'm using. But I think for mk4, a lot higher doses might be needed.

@Mauritio 100g of nato contains 850-1,000 micrograms of menaquinone 7. I think it's safe because I think people eat that much natto.

@alfredoolivas don’t forget about duck fat for k2.
Duck fat contains 3 times more vitamin K2 than ghee or egg yolks, 7 times more than butter or cream, and 13 times more than cheese or chicken liver. It ranks among the highest natural food sources of vitamin K2, second only to emu oil and goose liver pate.
Great in winter for roasting squashes and potatoes.

@alfredoolivas natto also has nattokinase and 100g of natto on an otherwise empty stomach will get pharmacological levels of the enzyme into the blood. natto is also apparently a decent biotin and choline source.
a normal package is 40-45g and that's enough for me tbh. you can look for one with a sauce packet with decent ingredients.
the bacillus subtilis bacteria in it also produces its own antimicrobials.
it also contains spermidine.
