I know this might be a topic some people find uncomfortable, as others have mentioned, but it’s undeniably important—if not one of the most significant factors in how others perceive us. Let’s use this thread to compile the best tips for deepening one’s voice. I’ll start:

      This was shared by @sphenoid:

“It’s related to the tone of the vagus and accessory nerves, which control the vocal cords and throat. Massage, light therapy, and topical nutrients applied to these regions can help improve their function.”

I speculate that applying topical testosterone to this area might provide similar benefits, and perhaps even amplify the effects.

Excuse me if this is unreadable, I am pretty tired and had a long day

@William-Shat Big part of it is training to "speak from" your diaphragm and not your head, making sure not to deepen it using your actual vocal chords, per se, or else you sound like an idiot and people will definitely be able tell. Aside from this high-ROI behavioural shift, I think much of it is DHT-driven and the changes will be permanent. Also I'm confident serotonin is involved in some way, seen it in myself and others.

@albion Interesting. Do you believe serotonin lowers or raises pitch, and what did you observe in others and yourself?

@William-Shat I believe Serotonin heightens the voice and makes it sound frail, fragile, and less soothing. And not a heightening such that it sounds childlike; more making it softer and higher pitched. I've listened to videos of myself in dark times, and have "diagnosed" family members on their bad days by the height of their voice (men only), which maybe could mean that thyroid is responsible and not serotonin, but this is just my instinct.

From my experience, one thing really helped was increasing dopamine by taking Selegiline. It felt efortless to talk louder.
Being well fed, eating every 2 hours, relaxed my body till the point of being able to talk without any stress, relaxing my throat muscles. This decreased my pitch without trying, naturally.

I had a noticeable deeper voice when taking Androsterone. Also smoking helps, but don’t recommend it.

I'm pretty sure good liver function correlates with a deep voice. Can't remember the source though.

Good question. It’s been said before, but simply relaxing breathing deeply and speaking from the chest (or diaphragm as @albion says) instead of the mouth can do wonders. Being constantly aware to do that whenever you speak will, sometimes quickly sometimes gradually but either way definitely, result in improvements.
Same exercise would help women too, in a different way, by making their voices clearer and less strained.

@DkJoe2 that is some knowledge if someone can find proof for it, and find the mechanism of action

I’m inclined to say they weren’t. As my voice varied on the days I wasn’t taking it. But over a long enough timeline, optimising DHT, or at least avoiding DHT inhibitors, will cause permanent effects.

@GreekDemiGod So sadly, it may have only temporarily changed the vocal tension due to stress reduction

Hey bro the answers you got here are bullshit

check out what vocal coaches prescribe.

more specifically, I recommend "Make Your Voice Heard: An Actor's Guide to Increased Dramatic Range Through Vocal Training"

it goes through a bunch of exercises, if you do them for like a month or longer you will hear a difference. i do them very sporadically and have noticed a huge change. dht etc sure but this is the real direct way, specific training

@16charactersitis I have read many times that one should speak from the stomach. (It hasn't helped me much when speaking with friends or in public, it only helped when speaking in isolation.) Is this any different from trying to speak from the chest?

Replying to the second part, I feel that constantly being self-aware can disrupt the verbal recall and fluency of speech. These qualities usually come naturally when one is relaxed or in his flow state. Excessive self awareness might lead to stuttering, overthinking, social anxiety etc . In other words, what I’m trying to convey is: let the unconscious mind take control.
