How does modified citrus pectin differ from regular old pectin say from an apple?
@raytreats Good to hear my man. I am opting for lower doses since doing the big ones for a while. I don't think Niacinamide in such high doses is beneficial. I much prefer the smaller ones spread throughout the day. 2g in one dose made me feel very weird like I wasn't really having any thoughts, just purely in the moment. Kind of odd, I didn't like it.
Intro and background
Hi there, I've been following Peat and the community for a while now mainly through Danny Roddy's YouTube channel but I've never been a fan of forums until now. I started watching Danny back in 2019 I think because I had bad acne and my hairline ever so slightly was receding though it hasn't much since then. I was only a teenager then and so I didn't do much research and only done the bare minimum resulting in little to no change and actually a worsening of my acne. I think this was due to a zinc, VA and pantothenic acid deficiency (at least one of them). Or possibly an inability to process VA properly. I took a break from trying to solve health problems and just started living my life instead for about 2-3 years until a couple of months ago.
I had been heavily drinking in these years due to my social life and it was fun but I neglected my health and was irresponsible. Once I started getting panic attacks the day after a drink I stopped drinking and it was very easy which makes me think I wasn't addicted to the alcohol or using it as an escape from my problems since I quite cold turkey pretty easily.
Recently I've had to deal with some pretty intense anxiety and headaches and really just all sorts of symptoms like fibromyalgia. Quite literally felt like I was going insane for a couple of months and I was searching for answers everywhere in the peat world.
After experimenting recently I think I have figured out where my problems are coming from and I am going to use this log to document it for my own mental health and just to keep a record. I figured it would be cool to do this on the forum to see other peoples input and opinion as I have found journaling to be helpful so this could be too. I want to share my thoughts on not only nutrition but lifestyle as a means to achieving a flourishing mind and body.
My recent diet and lifestyle endeavours have included the Low VA approach and it gave me some relief but not very profound relief and I am realising the problems with this approach through my own experimentation. I think it is due to an irregular metabolism of VA instead of the view that all VA is poison. After reading @Amazoniac I realised this and after experimenting on myself.
So I started eating this diet, lots of beef, chicken, beans, bread, rice, oats you name it. I noticed it somewhat cleared my anxiety. My acne still remained.
I was taking thiamine Niacinamide aspirin and biotin as well as some thyroid and vitamin K2. Pretty good stack.
Started getting a lot of small little cherry angiomas (really small) which I assume is a sign of estrogen.
Noticed my skin was looking nicer on my whole body especially hands, it was feeling smooth.
Brain fog clearing but replaced with laziness and ADHD like symptoms and still not quite got that mental capacity I used to.
Skin becoming thinner like I am aging rapidly!!!
I literally noticed this yesterday and so I decided to look on YouTube at some of these low VA people and they all have the same problem with no improvement (only worsening). If you look at Garret smith you can see it in his face, his skin looks so thin (I went back to his oldest video and it did not look like this) grant genereax as well. You can also look at any of the testimonials on his YouTube and the people have very thin skin. It doesn't look healthy. Then I decided to look at all the people practicing Peat principled approaches. They all have glowing tight and plump skin including peat himself.
Another thing I noticed is decreased brain power, I also noticed changes in the skull shape of some of these low A practitioners and I think it is telling as their skull seems to be getting smaller and their brow ridge regressing. I had noticed these changes in myself. I tend to notice these things in people. I am often very analytical and have even been criticised by my family for being this way. I had seen someone mention on the low A thread on RPF that Grants resting heart rate was 50. This is not the way and I think it achieves results (when it actually does) because it lowers the inflammation created from these retinoids. Your body has a hard time processing retinoids because it doesn't have much of a purpose for them as you metabolism is too shot.
I'm going to include vitamin A foods back into my diet as every time I do I get my mental capacity back and skin feels better.
Problems recently
Supplements recently have been:
Been seeing great results with the pantothenic acid in terms of bowel movements. I should note that I've been getting really thin stools but since starting on pantothenic acid it has since improved and become more bulky. Im also including more fibre like oats, beans, apples etc. which I think is something that the Toxic Bile Theory gets correct in some respects. We need something to bind bile so it doesn't get reabsorbed and cause problems, allow the body to excrete what it wants to excrete.
If you finished all that then thanks for reading and lmk your thoughts. I'm still new and learning so have patience for my lack of understanding.
That’s some real alpha shit
So glad I didn’t decide to do SSRI’s for hypochondria.
It felt like I had chronic fatigue and I was losing my mind. I was very close to trying out SSRI’s but glad I didn’t and trusted in myself and my judgement.
I may trial BCAA’s and see if they have an effect on me. So far thyroid, biotin, Niacinamide, thiamine and aspirin have been my greatest and most powerful tools. Really powerful stuff. Don’t do too well on progesterone I suspect because I’m male.
So do you think there are any cases where restriction could be helpful?
I’ve read your article on daily excretion rates and it seems you said hepatic stores of 30ug/g is what the body wants as after that point it tends to dramatically increase the disposal of retinol.
Do you think restriction for a short while could be useful followed by introduction of retinol back into the diet with other things that may prop up the metabolism to help utilise it. It seems a lot of these low A people can’t go too long on it and end up resorting to eggs. I personally tried Low A for about a month now and each time I restrict to much I feel what I can only describe as though I am becoming dumber, I lose inspiration for life and just drift. Then as soon as I eat some cheese and or eggs I feel my gusto coming back again…
Is restoring thyroid function the best way to deal with this and some sort of mild restriction?
However going low A brought some relief in terms of anxiety and other problems like that but if I go to long I feel mentally impaired.
@questforhealth
Yes I used to be a big milk drinker but I think it may not be the way to go unless you have a good reliable source
Yea that’s always something I’ve thought about. I think the rise of feminism and woman taking on more masculine roles comes from a lack of promising, motivated and innovative men today and woman feeling like they need to fill the gaps.
The environment has pushed men to become more feminine and women more masculine. Ultimately this is because they are both becoming increasingly estrogen and cortisol driven. I see it in the young men around me, they are not driven, only a small few.
Do you have a link to this study?
Interestingly in this study it looks like RBP levels decreased and so did TTR.
What would be the mechanism of action here since both thyroid and vitamin A levels increased you would expect their carrier proteins to as well no?
@Peatly Interesting study although I’m not sure if it agrees with the Low A crowd or disagrees. I don’t know enough to comment but it seems it could fit into their paradigm
“Nevertheless, the only study describing hepatic vitamin A levels in PBC patients showed that retinoids accumulate in HSCs.24Nyberg et al.24 confirmed that PBC patients have lower serum retinoid levels than controls and that these levels correlate with the stage of disease. Additionally, they found that HSCs are larger and more numerous in PBC patients in comparison with the controls. Also, while serum retinol binding protein (s-RBP) staining intensity was comparable to control intensity, staining intensity of cellular RBP (c-RBP) was significantly enhanced in PBC patients. This suggests that the release of retinoids from HSCs may be restrained in PBC. The lack of stimulatory effects of estradiol on the hepatic secretion of RBP during menopause may further explain why PBC affects primarily elderly women.5, 25 In 2000, Erickson et al.26 suggested that vitamin A toxicity may contribute to the aetiopathology of PBC. Intrahepatic cholestasis caused by vitamin A intoxication has been reported in two cases,27, 28 and interestingly, in one case hypervitaminosis A was cured by the application of UDCA.28”
@jamsey is this micro grams? (ug)
A whole new wave of fitness influencers in tik tok are emerging and a few of them seem to have been influenced by Peat.
Tik tok has the ability to reach a much wider audience than almost any other platform and the younger generation are being influenced.
I personally got into this world as a teen with acne and I was watching that YouTube fitness guy Christopher Walker and he mention Ray Peat as an influence. Wanting to get to the source of the information I came across Danny Roddy’s channel as well and continued from there. So fair to say that the intuitive in nature will dig deeper.

Just two I found this morning
Probably a decrease in metabolism. Cold hands and feet, mental problems. I suffer from these, felt like I was on the verge of death today but I saw @haidut study on cancer treatment using b1 b3 b7 and aspirin so decided to take all of those today in doses of 1g, 500mg, 10mg and 600mg and it had profound effects on my mental clarity and energy to the point where I felt more normal again.
Going to up the dose tomorrow as I experienced no stomach upset with the aspirin which was my main worry. Seems to fair well when taken shortly after the B vitamins. Off topic but I wanted to share
@sphenoid yes most likely stopping sumps helped my gut issues. Also getting a lot more fibre in now from things like apple and oatbran which seems to help. Even things like orange juice would cause me to go into a sort of GERD attack.
I don't necessarily think fat solubles A and D are toxic, I'm not fully indoctrinated but there must be some reason why limiting VA gives people relief from health problems. There's a thread on the RPF of someone who is trying the low VA diet and he speculates that substances like glyphosate are the reasons so many people have problems with VA which would make sense why some people run into problems and others do not.
@hypermensch I’m not gonna lie I know a lot of people think the low vitamin A thing is bs (and I’m not totally caught up on the science which I am trying to be) but I’ve been trying it out for like a week and a half now and a lot of the mental problems I’ve been facing and symptoms like head pressure and eye pressure are slowly going away. No idea if it is from lowering vitamin A or other factors but I stopped taking supplements like 3 days ago.
I noticed a couple of years ago when I took Georgi’s retinol product (I thought it would solve my acne which it didn’t) that it would give me head pressure and I acted pretty autistic haha. Just something to think about and possibly experiment with.
It also seems like there is a close relationship between thyroid hormone and VA which I’m not totally caught up but it seems like thyroid may be beneficial (if not necessary) for the proper metabolism of VA. Perhaps the reason people run into trouble with VA is because they overload their system with it even though they are hypothyroid and not able to properly deal with it.
I know this forum is probably gonna be pretty against the low A stuff but it’s been the only thing helping me right now as I deal with Anxiety, head pressure, hand and feet numbness, fibromyalgia type pain felt throughout body, mania, joint pain, GERD (so bad it makes me feel sick) and extreme brain fog etc.
As you can see it’s pretty sever symptoms. They are all slowly going away though and the first thing that is coming back is my mental clarity and head pressure is relieving.
Hope this helps. I’m still very new to this stuff.
@Hussle1738 I noticed something similar. Not sure if it was because I was simply paying attention to my surroundings more or not.
I noticed it even when I wasn’t doing progesterone. I think it’s more of a low serotonin, high dopamine thing.
I stopped walking with headphones in and it made me tune a lot more into my environment.
Don’t do that stuff.
Focus on your health and goals.
