@sushi_is_cringe I just want to get bloodwork again soon but they wont put the script in for me unless I do this first. Could go to a third party lab myself but then gotta pay out of pocket.

Ultrasound of Thyroid Gland
Ray Peat has talked about ultrasounds being beneficial for bone growth and tissue repair, but would ultrasound exposure directly to the thyroid be safe? My doc ordered an ultrasound of my thyroid since I tanked my TSH to basically zero and got my T3 3x over the reference range and theyre concerned (i just overdosed cynomel lol) However I think a shrunken thyroid is desirable from a peat perspective so anything that could promote tissue growth ie. ultrasounds may be risky??

RE: Anabology Honey Diet & Protein Restriction
@samson Yeah sounds very similar to my experience. And as far as dental health goes starch and phosphate-rich proteins seem to be much worse for my teeth than sugar.

RE: Methionine/Cysteine restriction increases longetivity AND energy expenditure
@Mauritio You can do carbs at dinner too, I think the lower carbs at dinner thing is more for weight loss purposes and just to not overeat calories at dinner. If youre doing the diet mainly for health benefits and longevity purposes and dont care about weight loss than its not necessary.

RE: Anabology Honey Diet & Protein Restriction
@Norwegian-Mugabe It wouldnt work the same for FGF21 induction because protein takes like 12 hours before its fully utilized. After eating only sugar your blood glucose will go back to baseline very fast like within 2 hours.

RE: Anabology Honey Diet & Protein Restriction
@jamezb46 I think it can work for muscle building purposes if you train in the afternoon around dinner. Or including small amounts of gelatin, or milk, or BCAA as long as its low fat during the day like 10-20g i’ve seen some people including skim milk and still having good results. Even fruit can probably supply enough protein during the day if its really a concern. A gallon of OJ has 32g protein for example. Or just having a big caloric surplus dinner and meeting protein requirements then.
-
RE: Anabology Honey Diet & Protein Restriction
@jamezb46 Yeah evolutionarily this makes sense. For example, if you were a mammal living in a tropical area, and your diet was mainly fruits, you still need to meet a certain protein requirement, despite the fruits being relatively protein deficient.
An animal eating a protein deficient food source would need to eat more food to get sufficient protein. I think the metabolism responds to this -- if your body perceives protein insufficiency, it tells you "okay eat more food bro" and burns off the excess energy. If you have sufficient (or above) protein, this effect completely disappears because the body is like "okay we're good bro stop eating. If its a good idea to hack your body into this high energy expending state i’m unsure but it definitely works.

RE: Anabology Honey Diet & Protein Restriction
@jamezb46 Curious if he would be able to produce the same effect with cypro + tyrosene + gelatin but no BCAAs. Considering how many factors there were im not fully convinced the BCAAs were responsible for the metabolism increase although in intrigued.

RE: B-complex and or Multi recommendation?
@GRay Your diet sounds pretty nutrient dense why do you feel the need for a multi vitamin?

RE: Methionine/Cysteine restriction increases longetivity AND energy expenditure
@Mauritio Yeah I even noticed a huge boost in metabolism and overall energy going from eating 150-200g down to around only 80-100g and increasing my carb intake even further. Most muscle building benefits stagnate around 1g/kg or 1.2g/kg of body weight.
-
RE: Methionine/Cysteine restriction increases longetivity AND energy expenditure
@Mauritio Yeah this makes sense. Also in the later years of his life Ray clarified that 100g+ would only be useful for an active young person with a 4-5k calorie metabolism. So, the needs decrease with aging as well as with slower metabolism, and activity level. Someone like me who is young in my 20s and active, lifting weights and maintaining at 3.5k-4k calories. I might need close to 100g or more but intuitively I tend to be around 80-100g and don't really go over that. Im still able to build muscle on this amount.

RE: Reasons for longevity in Japan?
@DavidPS I noticed also in a few of the so-called "blue zones" they are drinking mineral-rich spring water that's been filtered through limestone rock, resulting in high mineral content, particularly calcium and magnesium, due to the limestone's composition. Specifically Nicoya, Costa Rica which has a high concentration of this mineral-rich limestone. Their traditional diet is also low-protein and consists of primarily peaty foods. Nixtamalized corn, black beans, yams, white rice, tropical fruits. The black beans are notably low in pufa compared to other legumes as well.
Soybeans: 5.1g/100g
Chickpeas: 2.7g/100g
Kidney Beans: 0.3g/100g
Pinto Beans: 0.2g/100g
Black Beans: 0.1g/100g -
RE: Reasons for longevity in Japan?
Do any of you remember the people Dr. Peat sometimes mentioned in interviews who ate almost nothing but potatoes/sweet potatoes all year, plus pork one week a year? He mentioned they had good muscle mass despite low protein, but I forgot whom he was talking about and I lost my notes.
Could it have been the Tukisenta?
"The diet of the Tukisenta in New Guinea was studied in 1973. Their diet consists almost entirely of sweet potatoes. The Tukisenta were lean, healthy, and had little to no sign of heart disease or other diseases of civilization"

RE: Reasons for longevity in Japan?
Using the macro visualizer by @exfatloss you can see that 1950’s Japan and Okinawa diets consisted of shockingly high carb intake (80-85% of calories) Coming from mostly white rice and sweet potatoes. This means they ate a very low-fat (low pufa) and lowish protein diet particularly methionine/cysteine/tryptophan. This could contribute to their longevity and leanness.

RE: Water consumption
@b1 Too much water causes increased prolactin secretion. Can be hard to tolerate for a hypothyroid person. Causing frequent urination.

RE: Non-dietary/diet method's to upping BMR to 2-3k calories?
@onliest I was gonna say this too but he was looking for non-dietary methods. Definitely a very powerful tool.
-
RE: Methionine/Cysteine restriction increases longetivity AND energy expenditure
@Mauritio Nice, yeah i think this is definitely the most effective and safest way to go about restricting protein. Instead of restricting total protein very low like Ray did in his later years you can instead have periods of fasting from protein while still meeting your protein requirements overall.
-
RE: moderate protein restriction can cure all ills
@Mauritio I do exactly this. Large window of sugar-only from morning past noon (5:00AM-1:00PM) with nothing but honey, sugar, and some fruit. Then I excercise and 3-4 hour fast to allow last bit of blood sugar to be used up, then a big protein dinner around 5:00 or 6:00 PM. Its going great I totally recommend the intermittent protein restriction idea.
